Geocaching

We introduced some friends to the fun activity of Geocaching. It is such fun sharing caching with other people. I think they are hooked.  The first cache of the afternoon.  It was in an area that I'm guessing was flooded by hurricane Irene.  The container was a bit damp, but not too bad.
We found four caches, two of them in cemeteries.  Gabe thought this headstone looked like a Guillotine.

Wonderful afternoon spend with special friends.

Sunday Caching-9/30

We have had some truly wonderful weather this fall. When we can, we try and get out and enjoy some hiking and geocaching.

After church we headed out to attempt a multi-cache. These types of caches can be a bit more difficult as the first parts are usually micros. Most of the micros are about the size of film canisters (We all remember those, right?), but some can be even smaller. They will contain the coordinates for the next leg of the cache.

We started off with some difficulties as we parked on the wrong side of the river. There was no way were getting across without getting very wet! Once we found a good parking place on the right side of the river, the cache was fun. It is interesting how you start to think like a cacher and even if your GPS is hitting right on, you can find what you are looking for.

We had to be a little careful as the trail was along the river and the bank was steep in some places. Brian, Bessie and Gabe did most of the work up and down the bank and I stayed on top with the Littles. The first micro was hidden in an old stump. The 2nd part was hanging on the back of a tree that hang out over the river. Brian definitely had to retrieve that one. It was tied to the back of the tree with fishline...really tricky!

A great day of caching

We had a great day. The last part of the cache was a larger container with some fun goodies. We exchanged items, signed the log and headed back to the van.

We saw lots of pretty wildflowers along the way

And a lot of burdock too!

If you haven't tried geocaching, our family highly recommends it. It is an easy, fun and inexpensive way for the whole family to get out on the trail.

Friday

Brian was home today. It is always fun having dad home on a weekday. He was still recovering from his jet-lag, so we had an easy day.

He puttered around doing small jobs...working in the garden, rewiring the electric line out to the chicken coop and putting an GFI outlet behind my garden pond.

The kids and I had a light day of school and spent time hanging out with Bri.

Later in the afternoon we decided to do a geocache. There was one left at a local reservoir that we hadn't done yet. We packed up water bottles and snacks and headed out. It was a beautiful day and the trail to the cache was lovely. We all enjoy hiking and being in the woods and it is a wonderful way for the kids to get use up some of their energy!

Gabe was manning the GPSer, so we had a bit more trouble than usual. He hasn't quite figured out what all the numbers mean and he moves around so much that often the needle gets twisted around. I think it is time for us to invest in another unit. Once he decided one of the adults should read the info, we found it with little trouble.

This caches in interesting, a long tube down in the stump of the large tree. There was not a lot of trading items, but we added a few things to sweeten the pot for the next person.

Success!

I had put the fixins' for pizza dough into the bread machine before we left and it was ready when we got home. A few minutes of setting it up and we had pizza for dinner.

After dinner, the kids had fun with scissors, glue, yarn and lots of imagination.

More Caching

After church and lunch on Sunday afternoon, we decided to do some more caching. We seem to go in spurts like this, where we will do a lot and then take a break and not go out for a while.

It was a beautiful day for being outdoors...not too hot or humid and the sun was wonderful. There were three caches around a local reservoir that we were hoping to find.

One was an easy, quick one. The second one was fun. We had to hike a ways on the trail the goes around the reservoir. This is the type of caching we enjoy the most. It gets us all out in the fresh air and moving.

The cache was a bit tricky. The cache box was totally covered with moss, sticks, bark and leaves. It looked it like it was growing out the tree we found it in. The theme of this cache was wild animals, Gabe took a frog and we left a snake.

We didn't have time for the third cache as it was getting late in the afternoon. I had left pizza dough in the bread machine and the kids had their first night of VBS. We'll have to make another trip.

Weekend Caching

Today was a good day. The storm yesterday had cleared the air and although it was still quite hot, the air was so much less humid and there was a nice breeze. Everyone seemed to have more energy today.

Brian vacuumed the pool and puttered around the yard. The kids enjoyed some time outside. We caught up on laundry and I read some blogs.

After lunch we made a library run. This is always a favorite activity for everyone. Brian is going away again this week, so he likes to have a nice thick book to read.

Later in the afternoon we decided to hit a couple of geocaches. We haven't been caching in ages. We found two that were pretty close to each other. One of the spots was quite public, so we had to make sure we weren't seen. Brian stayed in the van with the Littles as they aren't quite the stealthy types yet. The cache was a micro, but we found it with little trouble.

The second cache was in a more out of the way spot, so we all trouped off to find it. With Bri in the lead with the GPSer we headed out. After getting twisted around a bit on the coordinates, Bessie found the large ammo box. They exchanged some items and I signed the logbook.

Geocaching is a fun, family friendly activity. If you haven't tried it, I would encourage you to give it a try. The only equipment needed is a GPS unit.

After we were done caching, we picked up Chinese food and headed home. Brian, Bess and Gabe enjoyed a dip in the pool after the Littles had gone to bed.

Interesting Day

Our day started out as most Saturday's do these days...with a soccer game. Brian brought Rachel to her game while the rest of the kids and I stayed home. We had planned on an afternoon of caching. I packed snacks, extra clothes, water bottles and our caching packs.

After a quick lunch, we headed out for the cache of choice. It was a multi, which means there are more than one part. It is a very interesting idea. The parts of this cache are pictures of birds that can be found around the area with choices of their Latin names. You have to find each multi (they were hidden in small bottles with screw tops and taped to tree branches with camo duck tape), identify the bird (a bird book is a must) and pick the right Latin name, which gives you the coordinates to the next part. It is along a walk/bike trail on the Mohawk River. It is a beautiful spot and was fitting nicely with our science study of birds.

All was going well, we set out, but while searching for one of the multis, we found a woman's purse scattered about. I was a bit nervous, hoping we wouldn't find the owner as well. We gatherered it all up and headed back to the van. Brian called the police. After a few calls and getting the right police department (we weren't sure which town we were in), a very nice young police officer was sent.

There was no money or credit cards, but there were a lot of gift type cards, driver license, SS card and what not. We found a few receipts and it looked like it had only been there a week or so. I kept thinking that maybe this would save this poor woman some bother if she got it back.

The police officer took all our info and we showed him where we had found it. He was going to look around some more in case we had missed anything. He was very nice and Gabe was extremely facinated with him. At one point Gabe whispered to me...is that a gun? I said, yup, the real McCoy. He was quite wide eyed and all the way home said he wanted to be a policeman. The officer did tell us that there were no reports of missing persons or anything, which I was glad of.

It was getting too late to finish the cache, so we packed it in and headed home. We made a stop at KFC to pick up dinner and a quick stop at Michael's to pick up the last skein of floss I needed to finish a cross-stitch block I am working on.

After dinner, everyone had a shower and we set everything out for church tomorrow. The day didn't go quite as we planned, but I was glad we were able to find the purse and report it. Maybe it will bless someone.

Brian had to unexpected go into work today, so the kids and I went to church and Sunday School alone. There was a missionary family speaking today. It was very good. I thought I was in the nursery today, but I mixed my weeks up. I really hate doing nursery but it is sort of a requirement if you have your child in there to take a turn every month or so. I was glad that I was able to hear the speaker.

It was pouring when we got out...really pouring, one of those sideways downpours. We were soaked by the time we got to the van. The kids thought it great fun to splash in the huge puddles that had formed. I wasn't thrilled with getting my good clothes so wet.

Brian was home when we arrived at noon and had lunch all ready for us. He is so sweet. We all changed out of our wet duds and had a nice lunch.

The kids played nicely and Brian and I looked at boats on-line (a favorite pasttime of ours).

The rain finally stopped mid-afternoon so Bri and I took a walk. Bessie was making apple crisp and she kindly watched the youngers. It was nice to get out and walk, just the two of us. That doesn't happen very often anymore.

After our walk, we booted all the kids outside. It had gotten warmer and the sun was nice. Bessie, Gabe and I went and did some caching near by. These were quick, easy caches, but still fun. One was a magnetic cache on the back of a guardrail. It was fun trying to be inconspicuous while you are searching the back of a guardrail on a busy road. The second one was our first virtual cache. It was the site (it is marked) of a murder in 1930. This brought up quite a discussion started by Gabe on what is murder and how we thought it happened. I'm going to do a search and see what information we can come up with about the event.

Bessie and Gabe at the murder site

I had put a roast in the crock pot this morning before church so we had a nice hearty dinner followed by Bessie's wonderful apple crisp. After the "Littes" went to bed, the four of us watched the end of a movie we started lastnight. A very nice day.
