Brian, Bessie and Gabe headed over to Mom and Dad's today. Bessie and Mom were going to the mall for lunch and some shopping. Bessie has been doing some babysitting and had some money that was just asking to be spent. Brian, Gabe and Dad were spending the day fishing.

The "Littles" (the name we affectionately call the new kids) and I had a nice quiet day at home. We did chores this morning and played outside after lunch...well the kids played, I watched them and did some stitching. I'm working on a Precious Moments block for my charity group.

Brian said Somerset Lake was too choppy today to make for a comfortable fishing trip out in the boat, so the guys ended up at Sadawaga, which is smaller and more protected from the wind. They had a good time and caught quite a few perch and sun fish. They didn't bring any home, but Gabe had a terrific time reeling them in. He was all smiles when they got home and had plenty of "fish stories" to tell me.

Bessie got some great bargains and was very pleased with her purchases. She and Noona always have a nice time together. It is a special grandmother-granddaughter time. She called me on the way home from the mall and had to tell me all about the things she bought.

It was a nice day for all. I started out feeling sort of glum because I was staying home, but decided to try and make the best of it and the "Littles" and I had a good time. They are really wonderful kids. We are still trying to figuring out how to meld all our personalities into a family unit, but we are getting there day by day. As each of us make allowances for the others, you can see glimpses of the wonderful family we will be one day.

We are planning on going to the Fair in the morning. The tractor pulls are in the afternoon, which I love going to, but Dan is terrified of loud noices, so we will pass on that this year. We hope to get a good 2-3 hours in before the pulls start.

We spent most of yesterday catching up on chores. I finished up the last of the vacation laundry, sorted through the CBD box that came with the last our fall school books and went through all the mail. Brian mowed the lawn and went on a grocery run.

Mom and Dad came by after lunch for a visit and to pick up an ebay purchase. They don't have internet. The kids are always so glad to see Papa and Noona.

Bessie had soccer practice and there was an open house at Dan's nursery school. Dan was shy at first, but warmed up quickly and I think he will be fine. It was a difficult decision for us whether to send him or not, but we think Dan will benefit from going to nursery school and it will give me a few hours a week to work with the girls without interruption. The clincher for us was that it is run by a Christian friend of ours from church.

Today Brian decided to get back to work on our Family Room. We have been working on this room for a couple of years and it is very close to being done. He is hoping to get the sheet rock finished this week. We will probably have everything done except the floor and can use it this winter.

I splurged and got my hair highlighted and cut today. It is always so nice to have someone fuss with your hair.

Hannah was suppose to have soccer practice, but it has been raining all day today. Tomorrow she, Gabe and Rachel will all have practices. Soccer season is going to be busy this year with four of the kids on three different teams.

Back home again

We got a pretty good start (for us) and had an uneventful trip home and arrived home at 3pm on Sunday afternoon. We made good time and all the riders did well.

Rachel and Gabe put together a floor puzzle

Hannah likes to "cook"

Everyone was happy to be home. The new kids immediately went right for the toys. We had a little bit of frantic behavior similar to what we experienced when they first came. We took some time to calm them back down and got everyone settled into something they enjoyed. It was great to be home. All of the animals did fine.

Dan loves the play food

I got right to the laundry and Brian started unloading the camper. It was raining, so we didn't get it all unloaded. Brian has this week off, so we chip away at that. Brian made dinner (he loves to cook) while I rotated and folded launcry and caught up on e-mails.

Brian makes dinner

Bessie works on her puzzle

I think this trip was really good for the new kids. To realize that the whole family can go away and that we come back home together, as a family. They have had so many experiences where they didn't get to go back home or someone brought them someplace and left them. Each new positive experience, like this trip, helps reinforce for them the idea of home and family.

Hiking and "Caching"

Our last day in Maine. We decided to get in some hiking at two of the Boothbay Landtrust Preserves. There are quite a few of these wild areas throughout the Boothbay area. We have hiked several of them in past years. The two we picked to hike today also had "geocaches" hidden, so that made it even more appealing.

It was a great day for hiking, clear and sunny and a bit cooler. The kids all did well, although I am not sure the new kids get the idea of hiking just for the sake of hiking. I think their lives in the Philippines were much more utilitarian. We had fun hunting for the caches. Gabe was the quick one to find them today. He and Bessie traded items.

Finding a "cache"

Gabe found a great walking stick this week and he has carried it with him ever since. He and Brian are going to shape it a bit and smooth it down.

We had lunch in-between the two hikes and made a side trip to Damariscotta to visit the bookstore. Brian stayed out in the van with the little guys and watched the boats in the harbor.
We had a campfire tonight and made S’mores. Gabe was feeling very sad that today was our last day. We need to try and work harder at doing more fun things at home. We get so caught up in working on the house and trying to get things done, that we forget to stop and play as often as we should.

The last evening at the campground
We will try and get an early start in the morning. The southbound traffic on I-95 looked terrible last week, so hopefully we will get a jump on the worst of it.

It has been a very nice trip. We were not sure at all how it would all work out with the new kids. It has been a surprisingly enjoyable trip. We were able to do the things we’ve enjoyed in the past and managed a few new things. God is so faithful and He has blessed us on this trip. It hasn’t always been easy and not as relaxed as in past years, but so much better than it could have been. The new kids seem to have enjoyed themselves and the rest of us had a very nice vacation.

Bradbury Mountain State Park

We got a good start this morning and drove down to Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal. We met Lisa and her boys for a day of hiking.

We picked an easy grade up the mountain so that Dan (3yo) and Jack (2.5yo) would be able to make it okay. We made a leisurely accent to the summit. The kids did great, stopping for sticks, rocks and other treasures. We saw a snake eating a frog. Lisa and I were able to chat and catch up on life as we strolled along helping Jack and Dan.

It was a gorgeous day and the view was wonderful from the top of the mountain. We took a slightly shorter route back down and all the kids made it under their own power!

We had a picnic lunch and the kids played in a field near the picnic area. It was so nice to see Lisa again. A very nice day was had by all.

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse

This morning I did laundry and the rest of the gang hung out around the campground. Everyone seemed to need some down time. The new kids get overwhelmed quickly with all the new things and like to spend time doing familiar things. For them that means digging in the dirt and collecting sticks and pine needles.

After lunch, we went out to Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. It is so beautiful there….the epitome of the rocky Maine coas t. The lighthouse is perched high above a rocky ledge that gradual descends to the sea below. The waves crash upon the rocks even in fair weather and can be quite spectacular in stormy weather.

The kids played in the tidal pools and collected shells. We took time to find a cache that is in the cove below the lighthouse. This was our first cache this trip. Gabe was very fascinated by a dead seal that was on the rocks further along the shore. I was just glad we were upwind. :-p Bessie, Rachel, Gabe and Gracie the dog, took a swim and enjoyed the waves.

It started to sprinkle, so Brian took the kids up to the van to change their clothes, while I sat on the rocks and watched the sea. There is something about the sea and the sound and movement of the waves and the birds overhead, that soothes my soul and often brings me tears. God seems so close and powerful at the sea. I find myself longing to raise my hands in worship. It makes me sad to leave.

We ordered pizza for dinner. I know…go all the way to Maine and eat pizza, but it is a family favorite and we were tired. We took our nightly walk and spent the rest of evening reading.

The Aquarium

Dan only woke up once last night, took a quick potty trip and went right back to bed. Hurray!

We packed up a lunch today and headed for the aquarium in Boothbay Harbor. It has some nice tank displays and a wonderful touch tank. This is a favorite of Gabe’s and the new kids seemed to enjoy it. We were not too sure how it would go over as they are very squeamish about most living creatures. Rachel and Hannah were brave enough to touch a few things, Dan just looked but didn’t fuss.

We lunched at the picnic tables there and headed back to Boothbay Harbor to hit a few of the wonderful shops they have there. Bessie has a favorite shop that has nice clothes and this late in the season, there is always a sale. She found a fun new purse, top and pair of sleeping shorts. We picked up a large kite to use at Pemaquid Point, which is our destination point for tomorrow.

Meeting friends

Dan slept better last night, although he still got up a couple of times, but settled back down quickly. By the end of our vacation, he’ll have it all figured out.

We met with an on-line friend today at a playground in Wiscasset. It is always nice to meet on-line friends face to face. The kids had a wonderful time and we adults had a chance to chat. The playground was the nicest one we have ever visited. There were plenty of things to do for big and small and even a climbing wall.

The afternoon found us at a little beach where everyone could get wet and explore. All the kids went into the water and of course Gracie the dog, who just loves to swim. Bessie was the stalwart one and spent most of her time there in the water. It was too cold for the new kids to stay in very long, but they loved wading in the gentle waves and collecting shells. It was quite humorous when the new kids went into the water and discovered it was salty. There were many funny faces and much spitting.

Bessie and Brian went for a run before dinner and we had a campfire tonight, complete with S’mores.

Day One-Ocean Point

Dan was up on and off for several hours last night. I’m not sure if he was nervous because it was so dark or just because everything was so new. He seems none worse for the lack of sleep, but I am very tired.

We had a nice leisurely morning around the campground. Brian and Bessie went for a run and I took the dog for her morning walk. The kids enjoyed playing around the campsite.

After lunch we drove out to Ocean Point; one of our favorite spots. The tide was out, so we explored some of the tidal pools. The new kids were so excited to see the ocean, although Rachel was nervous about sharks! Everything is so new for them. We often forget how narrow their life experience has been.

Bessie and Rachel ventured down to the waters edge and went for a dip. Rachel said it was too cold, Bessie said it felt warmer than usual. Everything is perspective. Brian also took Gracie (our dog) down to the water. She loves to swim and never misses a chance to get wet. I didn’t let the little guys go in the water because they would have had to walk across quite a bit of seaweed covered rock to get there and Gabe was too busy searching for creatures to bother with swimming. Tomorrow we will go to a spot that will be easier for everyone to wade and swim.

We found some nice shells and beach glass and collected some crabs to look at. We let the crabs them go before we left. Gabe and I decided to bring back a collection of different seaweeds to identify and draw.

We made a quick stop to the grocery store and then headed back to the campground. After a nice walk and some playtime on the swings and climbing structure, everyone was given showers and put to bed. Hopefully Dan will sleep better tonight. It was a pretty good day.

Gone Camping

We started out this morning on our annual camping trip to Boothbay, ME. The new kids did great. I wasn’t too sure how they would do with a longer car trip. Hannah and Dan like to pick at each other, but with the four youngest needing to be in car seats/booster seats, there are not a lot of alternate seating arrangements. They soon tired of bothering each other and settled into a more cooperative mode. We stopped once for lunch and gas and made great time, 6.5 hours. It rained most of the way up and was a bit soggy setting up camp, but overall it was a very successful drive.

Things are much more crowded in the camper with three more children and we are already planning on upgrading next year. It would be so nice to have more space. We took a nice long walk with the kids and the dog after dinner and everyone was pretty pooped out. Hopefully everyone will sleep well.

First butterfly hatch

The first of our butterflies hatched. What an amazing thing it is to watch the caterpillar forming the crysallis and shedding his skin and then waiting for something to happen. The butterfly was big and healthy and all went well. We let him stay in the aquarium for 24 hours and then let him go this morning. He soared up high and landed in one of our big maple trees.

Hatched Monarch

We wonder if he will make the long journey south and back again in the spring. We have three more crysallis to hatch and one more caterpillar that is still quite small. Hopefully they will all do well.

Gabe would like to try and keep a few of them over winter. We are lining an old birdcage, which is about 14" square and a 2' tall, with fine mesh screen to make a butterfly house. If the Monarchs don't work out, we have a coupon to send for some Painted Lady. I think it would be quite nice to have butterflies in the winter.

20th Anniversary

Wednesday (16th), Brian and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. It is amazing how fast those years have flown by.

It was an absolutely beautiful day, clear blue skies and temps in the 70s; a bit different than 20 years ago, which was hot and steamy. A thunderstorm rolled through that morning and left it even hotter and muggier. My hair which is curly anyway, really curled up that day. The hopes and dreams we had, so different than were we are. God has such a sense of humor when it comes to what we think our lives should be. Thankfully we have learned to stop trying to push our ideas so much and let him do the leading. We still have plenty of hopes and dreams, but I think they are much more inline with God's plan.

My wonderful parents agreed to watch the kids for a couple of days for us. What a treat. We hadn't had a night alone in seven years. After dropping the kids off we headed out for lunch. Oh, the joys of having a quiet undisturbed meal. We did some shopping and then came home. It was wonderful having time to chat uninterupted about everything and nothing.

Around 7:30pm, the phone rang and I knew before I picked it up that it would Gabe (our 7y0) or someone calling about Gabe. It was. He was in tears, actually sobs, poor little guy. He does not like being away from us at night. After realizing that he wasn't going to calm down, we headed back to my parents. Oh well, we had a terrific day together! Bessie (13yo) decided to come home too, so we left the "Littles" (that's what we call the new kids) there...they were already asleep in bed...and headed back home with Bess and Gabe.

It was so quiet the next mornng with just two kids instead of five. We went out to run some errands; stopped for a quick lunch at McDs, Gabe's choice, Target for the newest Nancy Drew computer game for Bess and Gabe picked out a computer game he liked, the car parts store for new rear shocks for the van and finally the Family Farm store for chicken feed, rabbit pellets and crickets for Gabe's frogs. Not exactly the day we thought we would have, but enjoyable none the less. We headed back to Mom and Dad's to pick up the other kids and stayed for dinner.

Everyone seemed very happy to be back home and in their own beds. The new kids are always a bit nervous when we leave them places. They have had so many loses in their little lives and I'm sure they are wondering if we are coming back to get them. I'm hoping that these short visits will give them assurance that we can leave them and will come back.

We have been having a lot of fun this summer raising wildlife. We raised woodfrog and peeper todpoles to frogs. Gabe was so happy to have the frogs, that we decided to make a more permanent habitat for them. We constructed a 1/2 tank, which is half water and half land. We used a piece of plexiglass and aquarium sealer to make the tank. It came out much better than we had thought and we are very happy with the results.

Our 1/2 tank

We have two Leopard Frogs and an Eastern Red-Spotted Newt in the tank. The frogs have gotten quite tame and will eat the crickets, moths and other bugs we catch right out of our hands. One our next projects is to set up a cricket tank so we can raise crickets for our frogs.

We are also raising Monarch's this summer. We have found quite a few on the milkweek plants around our house. One of them escaped and made his crysallis on Rachel's sandal. Unfortunately, we didn't realize this until after she tried to put it on and damaged the crysallis. We have four more crysallis at various stages and hope to have our first butterfly in a few days. We have one more caterpillar that is quite small. We feed them fresh milkweed everyday. It is amazing how much they can eat.

Two of our Monarch's "cooking" in their cozy little homes.

I have as much fun with our nature projects as the kids do.

I finally decided to take the plunge and start my own blog. I enjoy reading the blogs of others, so maybe someone might care to read mine. I'll try to post at least weekly, but hopefully more often.
