Get Together

Tuesday evening we had a joyous gathering of friends at the "Os" home.

We try and get together with these families a few times a year. Each family has at least one adopted child and the four families combined have children born to five countries, the USA, Haiti, Guatemala, Korea and the Philippines.

We had wonderful fellowship, delicious food, lots of conversation, games and laughter. It is so fun for our children to be around other adopted children and for us to share the trials and joys of being adoptive families.

The Day After Christmas

Ah, the calm and slowing down of life after Christmas. Each year we vow to do things differently, but each year we seem to get caught up in the Christmas rush anyway. I'm not sure what we really could change, but I sure wish we could figure out a way to make the last week before Christmas a bit less frantic.

Brian does not have to go back to work until 1/5/09. I am very much looking forward to this family time.

Today was wonderful, quiet, calm, relaxing and fun; the children each enjoying their gifts and having time to hang out.

Dan enjoyed some sticker fun. This wasn't a Christmas gift, but the girls were working at the table and he wanted something to do too, so I gave him a sheet of Christmas stickers and he was content.

Hannah got this great art and play set from one of the cousins. There are paints, markers, stickers, paperdolls and stamps and they all have to do with Disney Princesses.

Rachel worked on making some beaded necklaces.

Gabe put together his Lego set.

Bess purused the internet in hopes of finding good deals and to spend the gift certificates she received.

We all spent time outdoors today, hauling firewood, filling birdfeeders, sledding and playing on the very large ice patch in the neighbors field.

I opened my new sewing machine and worked through the set up instructions. I think I am going to love working with this machine. :-)

And of course, there was plenty of play on the Wii for everyone. I love the bowling.

Christmas Visit at Mom and Dad's

We headed over to Mom and Dad's later in the afternoon. This year it was decided to meet there a bit later than in years past and I loved the slower pace of our morning, as we didn't need to rush off.

We had a nice gathering this year with Mom and Dad, our crew, Glenn, Theresa and their children, Dave, Sandi and their girls and this year, Walt was home.

We had a nice buffet meal and then opened gifts. The younger group headed outside for some play time in the snow.

It was a very nice afternoon and evening and the most pleasant way to spend the end of our Christmas.

Everyone took their turn signing the tablecloth.

Abbie and Dan

Emily and Hannah

Julia, Bessie and Mariah

Here is the whole group...all 20 of us. Mom and Dad's living room seems so much smaller these days.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas too!

Christmas Morning

We had a very nice Christmas morning. The children didn't get up terribly early and everyone was in good humor...always a bonus. We like a very orderly Christmas morning with only one present at a time being opened. We took our time and enjoyed each persons gifts as they opened them.

Here is our front room with the presents around the tree and the stockings on the couch.

The Littles do not like waiting for breakfast, so we went ahead and fed them before we opened presents. Brian, Bess and I just had our morning cup of tea. I would like to come up with something easy and yummy to have on Christmas morning. We have made breakfast souffle type things, but that takes too long to bake. I'm going to give it some thought for next year.

Can you see Dan's face in this picture? He was just too excited. It was so cute.

We open the stockings first. There are always fun goodies to be discovered.

In years past, we have taken each of the children to the dollar store to buy for each other. This year they drew names. This worked out much better as we allowed them to spend a certain amount and each child got a nicer gift from a sibling.

Bessie had Rachel and bought her a nice set of Prismacolor pencils and an art pad. Rachel was thrilled as she loves anything to do with art.

The only thing Hannah told us she wanted was a Fairy Barbie. She was so excited to find it under the tree.

Dan just liked opening the presents. I'm not sure he even looked at most of them until he was done. When he finally took time to look over his gifts, he especially liked the chunky action figures. These are great toys for him as they are just his size and almost indestructible.

My big gift was a new sewing machine. I actually knew about the machine last week as Brian did not want to get it without me picking it out. I did not use it for my tablecloth project and he wrapped it up and put it under the tree. I can't wait to use it. I have had my old machine for 20 years. It has been a good machine, but I was so happy to finally upgrade.

Here we are enjoying our gifts and relaxing. Each person looked over their gifts a bit more carefully. Not sure we will find the floor for a while.

After all the gifts were opened, Brian and I told the kids there was one more gift in the closet. We downplayed the whole thing. We had Bessie and Gabe open it and they were totally floored that it was a Wii. We had talked to them before Christmas about taking some of the allotted money for Christmas and buying a Wii, but that would mean fewer gifts. After a lot of discussion and coming to the conclusion that maybe the Little's wouldn't enjoy it as much as the bigger folks and wouldn't understand the trade off of the cost, it was decided not to get one.

Brian's recent trip had been extended about a week longer than expected, so he decided to surprise the family and he bought a Wii while in Hawaii.

The look on Bessie and Gabe's face when they opened it was perfect! (This was not a staged photo.) I love it when we really surprise them with something totally unexpected.

This has turned out to be a wonderful gift for the whole family. We have been having such a great time. The Wii is a very active participatory game, no sitting on the couch working your thumbs with this game.

Christmas Eve

While I was busy sewing, the children spent a lot of time outside. The temperature steadily rose throughout the day and it made the snow sticky and great for building.

They made a couple forts and had a terrific time having snowball wars.

Sewing Project

Christmas Eve day found me with much to do, but as so often happens with me, I get something on my mind and go off on a rabbit trail, leaving the main trail behind...namely finishing up the Christmas preparation.

So, what was the rabbit trail this time?...a tablecloth. Hmmm, sort of strange, but let me try and explain. De'Etta at Choosing Joy, has a wonderful Thanksgiving tradition of having everyone that is at their home for dinner sign their tablecloth. I loved this idea. We don't often have the whole family together for Thanksgiving, so we decided to do it for Christmas instead. Last Christmas I bought a large tablecloth and brought it to to my mom's to use on the table for Christmas dinner. Everyone there signed it and Bessie and I embroidered the names and added the year.

Now, all year long I have looked at this tablecloth and was not happy with it. It was too plain and I liked the idea of having designated areas for each year. (De'Etta, I'm thinking Mike had a similar suggestion?) I had thought of using ribbon, but disregarded that idea. I finally settled on buying some fabric, cutting the tablecloth into squares and resewing it all back together with some nice Christmas fabric for sashing. Of course I didn't come to this final decision until a few days before Christmas, thus the mad dash on Christmas Eve to get it done.

Here is the project before I started cutting. You can see the names from last year over in the corner by Bess.

I cut the tablecloth into eight squares, evened them up and straightened the edges.

Sew, sew, sew! There was yards and yards of fabric to work with.

Here is the fabric I chose. One good thing about procrastinating waiting so long is the fabric was on sale.

And here is the finished project. We have eight nice sized squares. I think I will use each square for the next eight years and then start over in the first square with a different color embroidery floss as there is plenty of room. That will give us 16 years of family signatures.

I had so much fun working on this project. I haven't done a lot of sewing in quite a while and have been wanting to do more. This was a relatively easy project to work on.

De'Etta, thanks for the wonderful idea to add to our family traditions.

For Today...December 22, 2008

Outside My Window...Lots of snow from two storms over the weekend. The wind blowing the snow around, making it look very blustery out.

I am thinking...how am I going to get done all I have planned in the next two days.

I am thankful for...my wonderful husband who is always willing to help me with any of the Christmas preparations.

From the learning rooms...pretty quiet today. We are still working on our Jesse Tree.

From the kitchen...Oreo truffles

I am wearing...warm and comfy clothes

I am creating...a few last minute Christmas projects...shhh!

I am going...to Dan's speech and then taking the children for some last minute shopping.

I am reading...a couple of Christmas novelettes.

I am hoping...to get a lot done today and tomorrow.

I am hearing...wild screams from caped children running around.

Around the house...packages tucked here and there, a glowing Christmas tree and half done projects.

One of my favorite things...when Christmas finally arrives...then whether I'm done or not, well, I'm done. :-)

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week...work on my todo list and try to have some fun inbetween all the things to be done.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing..

Weekend Snow-Round 2

It snowed most of the day today. Nothing too heavy, but we did get a few brief periods of heavier snow. I think we ended up with another 4-5 inches.

Brian snowblowed again after dinner. It sure is looking like a winter wonderland out there.

Trimming the Tree

We let the Christmas tree rest for most of the day today. It melted off and dried off nicely.

Here it is before we started to decorate. I love Christmas tree and the smell in the house is wonderful.

We turned on some Christmas music and one of our favorite Christmas traditions begins.

Brian and I always put on the lights and the bead garland first. Of course, the children all get out their ornaments. Each year, the children get at least one ornament from us. Oftentimes, they will get more from family and friends. Bessie and Gabe have quite a stash my now. This will be the Littles third Christmas with us, but they already have several each.

Once the lights and beads are on, everyone can begin hanging the ornaments. We try to keep some order, but with seven people working around the tree it can get a bit crazy.

Dan puts all his ornaments very close together. He is so cute and took great care in finding just the right branch to put his ornaments on.

Gabe is a more experienced tree trimmer. He spaces his ornaments out and makes sure there are no drooping branches.

Some of Bessie's ornaments are very fragile and quite lovely. She makes sure to place them higher up, out of harms way. She has also figured out that putting the glass ornaments closer to a light makes for more sparkle.

We couldn't remember who put the star on last year, so I put all the children's names on slips of paper and Brian drew one out. Gabe won the honors. (I just checked the blog and Bessie put the star on last year.) I'll need to make sure one of the Little's gets a turn next year.

This tree is smaller than last year's, but I think it came out very nice.

I enjoy decorating the tree each year, pulling out the ornaments and remembering where they came from and who might have given it to us. We have very old ornaments that came from my Grandmother and also a box of pretty glass ones from Brian's mom. There is the Little bunny that Sue cross-stitched for us and the star made out of Popsicle sticks with the picture of Meredith when she was maybe 5 or 6. She is 19 now. We have airplanes and lobster traps, a bird nest and a glass candy cane, Darth Vader and Hello Kitty.

I know many people have gorgeous theme trees, where everything goes together and all the colors match. Our tree is very eclectic but so full of memories and much joy. Each type of tree has its merit, but for now, with our house full of children, I guess we'll keep our mix-matched tree.

Foosball

We have some terrific friends who are very generous and shower our family with many blessings.

Yesterday, we were coming out of the library and ran into some friends. I'm not even sure you would call them friends as we see them very rarely and we don't know them that well, but they do very nice things for us. They asked us to follow them home, that they had some things they wanted to give the kids.

We went home with a large Lincoln Log set, a building set called Zome (very interesting looking), a game called Rivers, Roads and Rails and this Foosball table.

Brian and the younger set had a great time playing this afternoon.

We try very hard to "pay it forward" by passing on things that we are no longer using or need to other families. It is a terrific circle of being blessed and blessing others.
